Gift-Wrapped Headband Freebie for All Saints Day

I know everyone is buzzing right now in Halloween, but my Catholic kindergarten class has two big days in a row: Halloween AND All Saints Day. My Pre-K-1 building has a tradition of celebrating All Saints Day with an annual prayer service to honor the Saints.

Each classroom prepares for the prayer service by selecting a class patron Saint. As the big day draws near, we read stories about the class patron and create crowns that represent our Saint. Two children from each classroom are selected to participate in the prayer service in a special way (1 child reads/memorizes a few facts to recite about the Saint during the prayer service and another child brings an offertory gift to represent the patron).

My class Saint is St. Nicholas. I LOVE teaching my kindergarteners about St. Nicholas because they are amazed to learn that he is Santa.

To remember and celebrate St. Nicholas' spirit of giving, my class creates crowns that look like pretty gift-wrapped presents. These headbands are completely adorable and SO simple to make - they just require pretty scrapbook paper and matching construction paper. You know my obsession with bright and pretty colors, so of COURSE my students made crowns that are bright and pretty as well.

I know many educators do not teach about St. Nicholas (or any other Saints at school), but these crowns are also perfect for celebrating birthdays and other special occasions!

You can grab my FREE Craftivity to make Gift-Wrapped Headbands in your classroom too! The free download includes instructions (with photos) for creating the crowns, suggested paper dimensions, and a master template for copying the bow.

Prayer Space

I have a small prayer space in my classroom that we gather around to pray and learn about God each day. The table is updated each week to contain symbols of our current study. The items in our prayer space this week include a book about St. Nicholas, a pretty gift box, and a picture of St. Nicholas (in addition to our classroom bible and Rosaries).

This was a great book to read to the class- it provided a simple (somewhat fictionalized) account of St. Nicholas that my kinders were easily able to relate to.

Have a Happy Halloween and a Blessed All Saints Day!

Cutest-Ever Supply Pails

I just can't stop myself from adding new improvements to my classroom! This week I was at it again by giving my center for extra student supplies a fresh new look. I created what just might be the cutest-ever pails to hold classroom supplies.

Setting the Scene

I have a small shelf in the front of my classroom that I use to hold materials for the students to use. I keep the class table bins on this shelf when they are not in use as well as their folders that go home every day and a few extra sets of materials (scissors, markers, crayons, and pencils) that belong to me, but are sometimes shared with the students.

I previously stored these items in brightly colored boxes. The boxes worked because they were bright enough, but they were very flat and not particularly fun. Here is a "Before" picture of the shelf with my old baskets.

Despite my best efforts with the camera, my green shelf looks radio-active. It's actually a very pleasant lime green.

Gather Supplies

Desperate to jazz things up, I purchased some clear plastic paint pails from Michaels for about $5 eachand a few sheets of adhesive vinyl from Jo-Anne's. (I tried to find directly online links to these products for you, but was unsuccessful. My best advice is to ask an associate at Michael's where the paint cans are. You can find sheets of vinyl for about $3 each in the scrapbooking aisle at Jo-Anne's.)

One of my beloved classroom volunteers owns a Cricut and she took the vinyl home to cut for me. Then the real fun began- DECORATING! My friend Meggan and I had a crafty get-together and she helped me jazz up my supply buckets. The decorating process is pretty self explanatory: simply cut, peel, and stick the vinyl cutouts onto the plastic containers.

Planning and executing an effective method for placing the letters in a straight line that were properly centered on the bucket was a bit more complicated. I worked out a simple system for this task and I'll walk you through the process.

Letter Placement

To begin, place a strip of tape on the bucket to be your guide for laying the letters in a straight line. Test the tape ahead of time in a discrete location on the bucket to be sure it won't leave residue behind when you remove it.

Next, select the letter from the MIDDLE of the word that you will be labeling on the bucket. This task is much easier if you start at the center of the bucket and work outward. You want to place the letter above the middle point of the strip (midway between the two paint handles). Use your best judgement to determine the center of the tape strip.

In this example, I am spelling the word Crayons. I didn't want the bottom of the 'y' to stick to my tape guideline, so I gently curled the lower part of the 'y' up and let the sticky part hold it in place while I worked on the remaining letters. Here is a closer view:

Add more letters, moving outward from the center of the word. Here, you can see a bit more of the word Crayons forming.

When the word is in place, gently remove the tape guideline. Uncurl any letters once the tape is removed.

Add colorful dots to finish jazzing up your cute new storage bin.

By the end of the night, Meggan and I were feeling a little silly. We used the vinyl scraps to label ourselves. As you can see, I am the fancy one :) Meg's label says "Regular." It's ok. I still love her!

But back to the cutest-ever supply pails...
They also carry smaller pails at Michaels that are tall and narrow. Perfect for storing pencils. We decorated this one with a different polka dot style.

Here is the full set of finished supply pails. So stinkin' cute!

You may be wondering what the white background is in these photos. After I added the supplies, it became apparent that the inside of the pail looked kind of busy and the dark pink letters had lost their "pop". I solved this issue by lining the inside of the buckets with trimmed sheets of white cardstock and taped them in place. Voila! The pails got their "pop" back!

Here is the "After" picture of the supply pails back on my lime green shelf:

I know. Cutest. Pails. EVER.
Right?

Speaking of cuteness...

Halloween Treats and Fun

Need a little inspiration for Halloween? Look no further!

Monster Jugs

I have been LOVING all things monster this season. We have been reading the book Go Away, Big Green Monster over and over again in my kindergarten classroom. This book is one of my all-time favorites and my students are falling in love with the story as well. The monster in the story was the inspiration for these adorable treat jugs.

Let me tell, you, these are SO simple to make! Just take an old 1-gallon milk jug that has been thoroughly washed and dried. Use a box cutter to cut a hole in the back and then use white glue to cover the jug with crepe paper (the fun thing is that monsters can be any color so get creative!) Add a collection of googly eyes and  a mouth made from construction paper. As a finishing touch, place several thin strips of crepe paper into the hole at the top of the jug for hair and glue in place. Voila! Cutest treat jugs ever. It's an added bonus that they are durable and have a built-in handle.

My kindergarten students have 7th Grade Buddies that we meet with throughout the year. The 7th Graders will help each of my students create a monster jug to prepare for our Halloween party. I love this project because my only job is to cut a hole in the back of each child's jug and their buddy handles the rest!

I have to send a HUGE thank you to my friend Nicole Thompson for helping me create these jugs (she made the purple one). It was getting late, I was exhausted from a long day and Nicki helped me finish a project that I was so excited to share with you.

Quick and Easy Party Game

I love incorporating BINGO into all of my classroom celebrations. Playing BINGO with holiday-themed images is too much of a waste of time for me to justify (every single moment is valuable in a half day class). Instead, I use a regular BINGO set (such as color word BINGO or Numbers in the Teens BINGO) and jazz it up with cute seasonal foam shapes. Children use the foam shapes as BINGO markers to cover up their board as the game is played. (For Halloween, I dig out my spooky foam shapes.) The kids love playing a game with the fun foam shapes  and I love that they are learning something while they have fun. It's win-win!

Need a BINGO game?

You can find them in my stores on Teachers Pay Teachers, Teachers Notebook, or just buy them here with PayPal! All sets include 30 unique BINGO cards and word cards for the caller to randomly select and announce during game play.

Halloween + Reading = Fun!

I created a cute Halloween-themed booklet Kindergarten students to read. It's an interactive book called What Will I be for Halloween? and features the sight word "be". On each page of the book, students cut out, unscramble, and glue the letters to spell "be".  Each page also features an image of a student dressed in a Halloween costume to support the text. I love this little book!

One of my all-time favorite blogs is Schoolgirl Style. This is a wonderful blog for sharing classroom decor ideas and inspiration. This summer I was thrilled to hear that Melanie - the blogger over at Schoolgirl Style was sponsoring the Schoolgirl Style Challenge to determine the best classroom of 2012. By now you know that I am obsessed with creating a cute classroom for my students and I am always seeking fun DIY projects to set the tone of an engaging learning environment. Way back in September, I submitted my photo entry for the Challenge. Then I waited.

On Tuesday night I was so excited to discover that I was one of 6 finalists for the Schoolgirl Style Challenge. Voting started today and I could REALLY use your support to win this wonderful competition.
